This military painting of superior quality was shown by its 23-year-old author (he will die a year later), the Parisian artist Jean-Louis Gudin, at the exhibition of the Salon de Paris of 1822 (see our image nr. 26). It is titled "M(onsieur) Dubois à Alexandria" and shows a scene with the famous Napoleonic military surgeon Antoine Dubois (see our image nr. 28), bandaging General Jean-Baptiste Kléber (see our image nr. 29), who was wounded in the head during the the Capture of Alexandria, Egypt, 1798.
Louis (Jean-Louis) Gudin (1799 Paris - 1823 ibd.) was the brother of marine painter Théodore Gudin. As a boy he visited the Lycée Bonaparte and entered the Parisian Ecole des Beaux-Arts on January 30, 1817, where his teacher was the great Anne-Louis Girodet. Besides his activity as a painter he also worked as a lithographer.
