Offered by one of the Belgian auction houses as a portrait of a completely different person (the auctioneer was obviously misguided by the consignor), this miniature was taken out of its frame after we received it from our shipper, and on verso we discovered an authentic old legend, written in Cyrillic in the 19th century by the sitter's nephew and providing the sitter's real name (see our image nr. 7).
In fact, we see here the 31-year-old Prince Yegor (Georgi) Stepanovich Sumbatov (1801-1846) who had just been promoted to colonel (we guess this promotion in 1832 was a reason to order this portrait, showing him with colonel's epaulettes) Several years before he was awarded both orders visible in this portrait (see our image nr.11) - the St. Anna of the 2nd class with the Imperial crown (1830) and the St. Vladimir of the 4th class (1828).
From information found on the web about this man, we learn that he was born into an Armenian family as Prince Gevork Stepanovich Smbatyan. At the age of 16 he joined the Russian military service, and from that day the army documents called him (in the "Russian way") Yegor Stepanovich Sumbatov. He participated in the Russo-Persian (1826/27) and Russo-Turkish (1828/29) wars, as evidenced by his two chest medals.
A couple of years after this miniature was made, he was appointed military commandant of Yerevan (now capital of Armenia) and in 1839-1840 he was a head of the Armenian Oblast' (province). In 1840 he was awarded the Order of St. Georg of the 4th class.
In 1841, after the abolition of the Armenian Oblast', he was transferred to Tiflis (now Tbilisi, capital of Georgia).where he obtained under his command Mingrelski Yegersky Regiment (Russian infantry) of the Caucasian Reserve Brigade. Here, in Tiflis a court case was initiated against him for no reason, allegedly for abuse of office. Investigations dragged on for four and a half years. In October 1845, the count finally acquitted him. However, his damaged dignity and mental anguish undermined his health and he died in 1846.
