SOLD!

This monumental (73 x 100 cm) and extremely detailed drawing was made by Austrian battle artist and general (!) Emanuel Salomon von Friedberg-Mirohorsky in 1864 as reminiscence of the Battle of Novara (22/23 March 1849; see our images nr.13-14) fought between the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia during the First War of Independence, within the era of Italian unification. We see here among other the Austrian Chief-Commander Field Marschal Josef Wenzel Radetzky (1766-1858; CLICK HERE) with his staff. This scene strongly resembles oil painting by Munich battle artist Albrecht Adam from 1855 (see our image nr.15).

Emanuel Salomon Friedberg-Mirohorsky (1829 Prague - 1908 Prague) was born into a Jewish family (his father converted to Catholicism), studied as a young man at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, then - at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt by Vienna. In 1846 he became a lieutenant of the Austrian Army, in 1848 fought in Italy and in the same year by Vienna (Revolution of 1848), took part in Hungarian Campaign of 1849. In 1850 he was arraised to Major, in 1851, following the emperor's order, he painted the battle fields in Hungary. In 1855 he is already colonel, serves in Verona. From 1859, as a regiment commandant, then brigade commandant and later as a division commandant served in Osijek, Kormano, Budapest and finally in Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). In 1873 in Lemberg he became a major-general, in 1878 a Lieutenant-Fieldmarshall and retired in 1883. From 1884 onwards he dedicated himself exclusively to painting: genre paintings, watercolors, battle scenes, illustrations for books and various Czech newspapers. He was also active as a writer.
