Executed in 1824 by Viennese miniaturist Franz Schneck, it is a portrait of the famous Austrian actress, primadonna of Viennese "Burgtheater" Sophie Schroeder (1781-1868; see image nr. 8 and CLICK HERE). Since her first performance of Franz Grillparzer's play "Sappho" (see our images nr. 11-15) in Vienna in 1818 (CLICK HERE), she shone in the main role for several years, playing Sappho herself (not only in Vienna but also abroad).
Franz Schneck (1773 Vienna - 1857 Vienna) was first mentioned in 1806 as a student of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He had obviously (alike many of his fellow-students) studied there, for he was still represented at the academic exhibitions of 1828 and 1835. In 1839 he lived on Wohllebengasse 90 of the Wien-Wieden district of Vienna with his brother Karl (also a miniaturist, though not as skillful as Franz Schneck).
