This superior quality miniature happens to have a "twin": on November 17, 1993, the latter was sold at Christie's Geneva (lot 132 - see our image nr.10). It was the author's own replica of our piece, signed and dated 1855.
Both replicas are important works of one of France's leading mid-19th-century miniaturists, François Meuret.
It is a portrait of the 60-year-old Baron Paul Dubois, who is depicted here bearing the ribbon of the Officer Cross of the Order of Legion of Honor (this order's next class, the Commander Cross, Dubois will be awarded the following (1856) year).

Baron Paul Dubois was the personal obstetrician of Empress Eugenie (wife of Emperor Napoleon III of France). On March 16, 1856 (i.e. after both of aforementioned replicas were executed), Dubois was assisting at the birth-bed of Eugenie, while she gave birth to her only child, son Napoleon Eugene Louis Joseph Bonaparte (grandson of Louis Bonaparte, who was the brother of Napoleon I).

Baron Paul (Paul Anton) Dubois (7 December 1795 Paris - December 1871 Paris) was a son of famous Napoleonic surgeon, Dr. Antoine Dubois (sitter in our web #40985 and #40700). In 1823, he succeeded his father at the maternity hospital that later was to become known as the "Maison Dubois". In 1830, he was appointed Professor of Obstetrics in the faculty of medicine of the University of Paris, and soon became distinguished for his skill in diagnosis, his clear and eloquent manner of lecturing, and a peculiar facility for imparting knowledge. He became Dean of the faculty in 1852, and in 1863, he was compelled to retire from active occupation, owing to a failure of memory, the first symptom of a mental disorder which became confirmed, and continued during the remainder of his life. His writings consisted entirely of contributions to medical journals.
Our image nr.11 shows another portrait of this man.

François Meuret was born in 1800 in Nantes and died in 1887 in Beaumont-le-Roger (Eure). He studied in Paris under Aubry; exhibited at the Salon from 1822 to 1852, and, in 1827, received a second class medal. In 1864 he was appointed Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur.
Meuret, who was miniature painter to Louis Philippe and the Orleans family, was one of the best artists of his period. He painted most of the personages of the court, chiefly from life, sometimes pictures by Winterhalter and others. In the beginning, he was strongly influenced by Isabey, later his technique becomes softer and his palette more highly coloured.

Our images nr.12-17 show several works of this artist that were offered at art auctions in the last years.
