This is a miniature of highest quality, monogrammed with letter "W" in the middle of sunrays-circle (see our image nr.7). According to the authentic old legend on verso, the miniature shows 22-25 years old Martin Tschurtschenthaler-junior (1808-1833), son of very wealthy Innsbruck (Tyrol) trader Martin Tschurtschenthaler-senior. The latter's company "Martin Tschurtschenthaler" founded in Innsbruck in 1777, soon became leading business in the city, specializing on sale of drogery articles, colors, textile etc. and later became also a leading shipping company in town.
One month before his death (2 January 1832) the company's owner presented the whole business to the eldest son Martin-junior (our sitter). Unfortunately the later died on 2 May 1833 after a fall from a horse (see our images nr.11-12). One of his children, son Anton Alois, became later well-known Austrian physician and pharmacologist; in 1884/85 he even became Director of Innsbruck University (see our image nr.13).
According to the old legend on verso the author of this miniature, monogrammed with "W", was the well-known German artist Friedrich Wasmann, living in South Tyrol since 1830. A comparison with his works (see our images nr.14-18) fully confirms his authorship.
Friedrich Wasmann (1805 Hamburg - 1886 Merano) studied under H.W.Soltau in Hamburg, then under the Nazarene painter G.H.Nalke at the Dresdener Academy. From 1829 he worked in Munich as assistant of the artist Cornelius and in 1830 Wasmann moved to Tyrol, town of Meran. From 1832 he lived in Rome, joined the Nazarene circle, especially Overbeck, and also came in contact with Koch and Torvaldsen. From 1835 on he stayed in Munich, and in 1839-1843 again in Merano working as portrait painter. Later the artist lived for a few years in his native town Hamburg, and finally from 1846 in Munich.
Additionally we can confirm that this miniature is a unicum - there is only one known miniature on organic wafer by Friedrich Wasmann - we could not find any other through our extensive web research.
