These four miniature portraits of four members of the prominent German family Sembach (Frankfurt on Oder, province Brandenburg) were painted in 1831 by Leipzig porcelain painter and portrait miniaturist Paezelt (Päzelt; see Thieme-Becker).
The eldest - August Karl (Carl) Sembach - was born (according to information found on the Web; see our image nr.29) in 1758 and died in 1832 (a year after aforementioned portraits were made). He was a "Justizrat" (English: Justice Councillor) at town and province courts of Frankfurt on Oder. In 1830, the decree of bestowal of Honorary Citizenship was passed there, and August Karl Sembach became the very first bearer of this town's Honorary Citizenship. The other three portraits show (respectively) his wife Dorothea, nee Firnhaber, their son August Friedrich Sembach and the latter's wife Amalie Wilhelmine, nee Badicke.
According toThieme-Becker, Paezelt was mentioned in 1842 in Leipzig and was probably an itinerant artist traveling throughout German countries. His works are extremely rare.
Our image nr. 30 shows another miniature by Paezelt that was offered at Christie's London in 2007.
