SOLD! Mme Louise Girard "Box with (painted on porcelain) portrait of Napoleon", Paris, 1810/15

Price:  EUR

(Please note that for transactions concluded within the European Union, the VAT (Value Added Tax) of the EU destination country will apply.)

SOLD!

A snuffbox made of yew wood with (inserted into its lid) oval porcelain plaque featuring a painted portrait of Emperor Napoleon I. On verso of the plaque there is a signature: "Girard Pinxit", which implies that we are dealing here with an extremely rare (we could locate only other work by this artist in the auction records of the last 20 years - see our image nr.11) miniature portrait by well-listed Parisian female artist of the early 19th century - Mme Louise Girard.

Mme Louise Girard, nee Bathilde, was born in the late 18th century. As a young girl she married Regnault's pupil, Parisian engraver Francois Girard (1787-1870) and became his pupil and collaborator. Besides engraving she specialized in porcelain painting. At 1824 Salon de Paris she showed her porcelain paintings after Pierre Mignard and Francois Gérard. Otherwise, she was known, among others, through her miniature technique on porcelain portraits (sic!).
She repeatedly exhibited until 1850 at Salons de Paris.
Works of Louise Girard-Bathilde can be viewed in Museum of Bordeaux and Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
