Josef Kinzel (1852 Lobenstein, Austrian Silezia - 1925 Spitz an der Donau, Lower Austria) studied at the Vienna Academy under Eduard Engerth, Carl von Blaas, Carl Wurzinger and August Eisenmenger. Afterwards he was a pupil of Alois Gabl and Otto Seitz at the Academy of Munich. After completing his studies he settled in Vienna where he became a very successful and popular artist. Kinzel frequently made long stays in the region of Wachau in Lower Austria, where he sought after future subjects for his genre scenes from folk life.
