A miniature replica of George Desmarées' larger-scale portrait, which is currently on view at the Schloß Augustusburg in Brühl, Germany.

The sitter, Prince Johann Theodor of Bavaria, was born in 1703 as the youngest surviving son of Maximilian II Emanuel (1662-1726) Elector of Bavaria and Theresa Kunegunda Sobieska of Poland. He held the positions of bishop of Regenburg (1719-1763), bishop of Friesing (1727-1763) and bishop of Liege (Luttich; 1744-1763). In 1743, he became a cardinal. He died in Liege in 1763.

After the death of his parents, George Desmarées (1697 Osterby - 1776 Munich) traveled to Stockholm where he became a pupil of his uncle, van Meytens. From about 1720, he worked in Sweden as a portrait painter in oils and as a miniaturist. In 1724, he left for Amsterdam and Nurnberg where he attended the Academy. In the following year, he was a pupil of Piazetta in Venice. During his stay in Italy, which lasted about three years, he also painted miniatures. In 1728, he returned to Augsburg and was summoned to Munich in 1730 by the Elector Karl Albrecht, who appointed him "Kurfürstlicher Hofmaler".
Afterwards, he worked for different German courts: among others, for the Elector of Mainz, but always returned to Munich. From the middle of the 1740s, his original late Baroque style became increasingly Rococo-influenced and his color scheme brightened and he immersed the fabric depiction and psychology in his intimate portraits. Represented: Desmarées is well represented in German castle collections, i.a. Schloss Augustusburg and Schloss Falkenlust, and in German museums, i.a. Residenzmuseum in Munich and Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart.

Literature: Georg Desmarées; Carl Hernmarck, 1933. In addition to a Marie Ascension, the National Museum in Stockholm has a large portrait group and the Malmö Museum a portrait of Arvid Horn. Also represented in the Gothenburg Art Museum.
