Franz Pomassl (1903 Vienna - 1982 ibidem) was the youngest of eight children in his family.
From 1914 he attended the painting course in Workers House of the Viennese district Margareten.
From 1918 Pomassl worked as a carpenter, while at the same time studying in the evening courses of the Vienna School of Applied Arts.
In 1928 he produced his first oil paintings. From 1934 he owned his own studio, and also in that period began exhibiting with the Union of Artists, as well as participating in exhibitions of the "Wiener Kuenstlerhaus".
From 1935 the artist took part in the exhibitions of the Hagenbund together with Carry Hauser, Georg Ehrlich, Anton Peschka, Wilhelm Kaufmann, Fritz Schwatz-Waldegg, Erwin Lang, Karl Gunsam and others.
In 1939 Pomassl became an associate of the famous Viennese architect Otto Prutscher. In 1942 he was drawn into the German Wehrmacht. Toward the end of WWII he was convicted as a deserter and condemned to death, yet miraculously discharged at last. Soon, however, he got himself into captivity in Russia, and returned home only in 1947.
He was also active as a restorer, but, ever since his participation in the exhibition "Low-Cost Furniture Design" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Pomassl re-established himself as painter again.
