Simkha (Simkha Faibusovich) Simkhovitch was born in 1885 in "stetl" Novozybkov, Bryansk Region and died in 1949 in Greenwich, CT, USA. In 1905-1911 he studied at the Odessa Art School. In September 1911, on recommendation of the art school, he was admitted to the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. However, three months later he was dismissed because the allowed admission quote for Jews was exceeded (due to antisemitic laws in Old Russia, no more than 3% of students could be Jewish). In 1911-1912 Simkhovitch was a soldier of the 175th regiment, and in Autumn 1913 was re-admitted to St. Petersburg Academy, where he studied until 1922. For the first time he participated with his works in the exhibition of Jewish artists in Moscow in 1918. Numerous exhibitions followed, and in 1922 Simkhovitch's works were shown at the International Book Exhibition in Florence. Some paintings of that period were acquired by major museums of St. Petersburg, among them the Russian Museum. In 1924 the artist emigrated to the USA, at first settled down in the New York City and later in Greenwich, Connecticut. By 1930 his art was displayed at many major national exhibitions, such as annual shows at the Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design. His paintings and prints are now part of permanent collections of many museums, such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Cracow Museum of Art, Poland. Simkha Simkhovitch was a full member of the Brooklyn Society of Artists.
