Julius Diez was one of the most celebrated German artists of the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) epoch. He was the son of a merchant and the nephew of the painter Wilhelm von Diez. He studied at the Munich School of Applied Arts and at the Munich Art Academy with Gabriel von Hackl and Rudolf von Seitz. He later taught as a professor at both institutes.
From a young age, Diez was a contributor and one of the main illustrators of the magazine "Die Jugend", but also worked for the magazine "Simplicissimus". He illustrated the picture book "Miaulina" (1902) for the publishing house Schafstein & Co. (later Schaffstein) and produced pictures for "Knecht Ruprech"t, "Hanschen an den Santa Claus" and "Der faithful Eckart".
In 1904 Julius Diez took part in the first exhibition of the Deutscher Künstlerbund in the Royal Art Exhibition Building on Königsplatz in Munich. The following year he won one of two second prizes in the tender for advertising designs for joint advertising for the Stollwerck chocolate factory and the Henkell sparkling wine producer.
Diez taught from 1908 at the Munich School of Applied Arts and from 1925 at the Munich Art Academy, of which he was second president. Julius Diez was a member of the German Association of Artists. He was also president of the Munich Secession. At times he worked with Richard Dehmel.
