Mounted onto the 19th-century velvet embossed tableau (production of renowned Parisian frame-maker Alphonse Giroux) these are seven miniatures on ivory with portraits of members of French family Gautier de Charnace (according to information provided by one of the family's descendants, who sold this tableau at Parisian auction house "Coutau-Bégarie" - see our image nr.25).
Each of the seven portraits seems to be painted by a different artist (ranging from a 1st-class master to an amateur) and at a different time (from ca. 1770 to 1820s). Three of the portraits provide the sitters' identities:
1) The old gentleman (lower right edge) is Monsieur Bonaventure Jean Avril, owner of Chateau Charnace in commune Neuville-sur-Ain, region Rhöne-Alps, France. He was born before 1720. In 1740, he acquired Chateau de Charnace. He died before 1772 (in this year, a sale of his book collection took place at his Parisian house on rue Neuve-des-Petits-Chams ("…bibliotheque de feul M. Avril Charnace (English: library of late Mr. Avril Charnace - see our image nr.26)). As he left no descendants, Chateau de Charnace was inherited by his godson -
2) Bonaventure Jean Gautier d'Ecurolles (lowest miniature of the tableau showing an old gray-haired gentleman in black jacket with white waist-coat). After the latter's death, the Chateau was inherited by his son (and Monsieur Avril's grandson), Parisian attorney (and later - judge at Paris "Tribunal de la Seine") -
3) son of preceding, Baron Bonaventure Francois Gautier de Charnace (sitter in rectangular miniature in the center of the tableau). Our images nr.27-33 offer extensive information about him. This miniature strongly resembles works of famous Parisian, turn of the 19th century miniaturist, Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin (see our images nr.34-35).
The other four miniatures are portraits of anonymous female members of the family de Charnace.
