Dream provenance (what could excel?!): Kupferstichkabinet Dresden (Graphic collection of Dresden Gallery). Restituted in 2003 to its pre-owners, the heirs of the Saxonian royal family, and acquired by our gallery at the auction house Nagel, Germany on September 26, 2003, as Lot 1316. The inscription on verso (on the collection stamp of the Dresden Kupferstichkabinet) says: "Ausgeschieden/15.1.03" (engl. transl. "dropped out/15.1.03")". Another inventory inscription on verso says: "Schlossbergung/ Meissen Inv.#552/ Ernst Kietz/ b 1963-2122".

A brief web-search led us to the identities of the depicted children.
It turned out that we are dealing with the children of Prince Johann of Saxony (17801-1873; from 1854 King of Saxony; see our image nr.13). The children (from left to right) are:

- 2-year-old Georg (1832-1904; from 1902 King of Saxony; CLICK HERE)
- 4-year-old Elisabeth (1830-1912; from 1850 married Princess of Savoy-Carignan; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.14)
- 7-year-old Maria Augusta (1827-1857; never married; see our image nr.15)
- 3-year-old Ernst (1831-1847; died at the age of 16; see our image nr.16)
- 6-year-old Albert (1828-1902; from 1873 King of Saxony; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.17).

Ernst Kietz (1815 Leipzig - 1892 Dresden) was a well-known German portrait graphic artist and lithographer. In 1831-38 he studied at the Dresdener Academy, then moved to Paris where he studied portrait painting under Paul Delaroche. There Kietz became acquainted with Richard Wagner and since then belonged to Wagner's most loyal friends. Between 1841 and 1857 the artist regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon drawings with portraits of many known personalities of stage, music and literature. Paris was at the time the gathering point of the most remarkable spirits and became his second hometown, which Kietz first left due to an expulsion order as the German-French war broke out in 1870. From then on he lived again in Germany and became drawing teacher of Princesses of Schleswig-Holstein in Primkenau (Silezia) and then from 1873 until his death Kietz lived in Dresden where he was drawing teacher of Princess Karoline Mathilde of Saxonia.
