On view here is a very good quality miniature portrait of a young Napoleonic aide-de-camp in the rank of a captain (one golden epaulette with thin fringe on the left shoulder). He is decorated with a Chevalier Cross of the Legion of Honor which he definitely received before 1808 (it is the so-called 3rd model of the cross (without balls on the rays' tops) which is introduced in 1806; in 1808 the next, 4th model (with balls) will come).
On verso we see an inscription, handwritten by one of the pre-owners: "Amédée /Morand".

The expert of Parisian auction house "Collin Bocage" where we acquired this piece on March 25, 2021, decided that he is dealing with "portrait presume du comte Amédée Morand, general de division et comte d'Empire, aide-de-camp de Napoleon".
In reality there was not at all any Napoleonic general Amédée Morand!

Nonetheless, different attempts to connect the both names - "Amédée" and "Morand" - finally led us to the unexpected result:
The famous Napoleonic division general Charles-Claude Morand (and during the "100 Days" aide-de-camp of Napoleon - CLICK HERE) obtained a new aide-de-camp on 12th January 1808 - then still lieutenant (he will be raised to captain in 1809) and since 1807 Chevalier of Legion of Honor, Amédée Louis de Cubières. The latter remained in that position also after his promotion to captain.
Is he our man (connection: "Amédée - Morand")?
Known portraits of this person (see images nr.) although showing him much older demonstrate nevertheless a great physiognomic resemblance with our sitter!!

But ooops! Our young captain wears a blue (!) armband with golden borders of an aide-de-camp of a brigade (!) general on his left arm. His colleagues serving in that function in the staff of a division general (for example Morand) wore a red armband!
Unfortunately, the latter fact does not allow one to rely entirely on the identification of said sitter.
Or our knowledge about the dress of Napoleonic aide-de-camps is not perfect - ?
If this is after all a portrait of Amédée Louis de Cubières (later called Despans-Cubières), then we have made a sensational discovery - this man was one of the heroes of Waterloo (see our images nr. 9-11 with his detailed biography).
