As convincingly prove our comparison images nr. 14-17 we are dealing here with a work of well-known Scottish, 19th century portraitist Robert Thorburn.
Moreover, it is one of artist's earliest works; it shows his sponsor - 30/34-year-old Walter Francis, 5th Duke Of Buccleuch and 7th Duke of Queensberry (1806-1884; see our images nr.12-13).
Our image nr. 9 provides the extensive biography of Robert Thorburn.

Robert Thorburn (1818 Dumfries, South Scotland - 1885 Tunbridge Wells, Kent) was born as a son of a tradesman. He received a high school education in his native town, showing already in his childhood years the aptitude for drawing. When he turned fifteen, Thorburn began studying under Sir W. Allan at the Drawing Academy of the Royal Institute of Scotland in Edinburgh, and was awarded his first two prizes there. In ca. 1836, he went to London, where he studied at the Royal Academy Schools. In order to support himself and his family, and to obtain easy recognition, he took up miniature painting. He exhibited between 1837 and 1884 at the Royal Academy and other locations.
In 1848, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy and, in 1857, became the honor member of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1855, he won a gold medal in Paris. For some period of time Thorburn worked in Edinburgh; later, lived in Kelso and, from 1884, in Tunbridge Wells (Kent), where he passed away on November 3rd 1885.
Daphne Foskett adds further that many Thorburn's miniatures are very large and some are of full length. Some good examples of his miniatures are in the collection of H.M. the Queen at the Windsor Castle, including one of Queen Victoria, signed on the reverse (sic!). Thorburn's son Archibald (died in 1935) was also a painter, well known for his paintings of birds.
