Jan Rustem was born in 1762, in Constantinople, Turkey (now Istanbul). His father was Armenian, mother - French. He was educated at the Court of Prince Czartoryski and went to Warsaw, where he was a pupil of Norblin and of M. Bacciarelli. After travelling abroad, he became assistant in 1798, and in 1801 master of drawing and from 1819 to 1831 was teacher of painting at the University of Wilno (now Vilnius, Lithuania). He died in Vilnius on the 21st of June 1835.
