Etienne Ferdinand Mulnier-junior was born in 1783, in Cape, Santo Domingo (Caribbean) and died in Paris, in 1854.
Because of the revolt of aborigens, his parents took him to France when he was one year old. They settled in Nantes where his father, Jean Ferdinand Mulnier-senior began his activity as a miniaturist. A very young Mulnier-junior was called up to serve in the Napoleonic Army and, after short study, was appointed lieutenant in the 3rd Line Infantry Regiment. Seriously wounded in 1807 he could no longer return to active service and went into the Imperial administration. Having lost his position because of the fall of Napoleon he returned to Nantes where he decided to do miniatures. Soon he became the best pupil of his father and rapidly succeeded in equalling him. In 1838 he left Nantes and settled in Paris.
Schidlof says further: "The techniques of Mulnier Sr. and Jr. are so much alike that it is impossible to distinguish them".
