The sitter of this miniature executed in 1832 wears the uniform of a senior (ranks of major, lieutenant colonel and colonel) officer of the Hanoverian artillery brigade. An important detail; he has no awards - neither orders nor medals. The latter fact allows to identify him. In 1832 among the senior officers of the Hanoverian artillery was only one man - just promoted (in 1832!) to major - Wilhelm von Schade. His first award - Knight Cross of Hanoverian Guelph Order - he will receive in 1833. First mention of this man we find in 1813 - in that year he became artillery captain. It's clear that he ordered this portrait just after his promotion to major.
Matthias Radermacher (1804 Bonn - 1890 Duesseldorf) was a pupil of C.L. Tischbein, H. Kolbe and W.V. Schadow. He was a very well-known German portrait miniaturist.
