Formerly in the well-known "Archives de Lodygensky" (see our additional image) containing artifacts and documents from the property of famous Russian emigré Georges Lodygensky (in 1920s leading functionary of the "Red Cross" and (from 1924), together with Geneva lawyer Theodore Aubert, founder of the "International Anticommunist Entente" based in Geneva), this miniature is of Russian (!) origin. Being a portrait of a still anonymous gentleman it is monogrammed "F.D." and dated 1818 what means we are dealing with one of the latest works executed in Russia by French miniaturist Frédéric Dubois (as we will learn in his biography below he came to Russia in 1804 and left that country exactly in 1818.
Frédéric Dubois was born between 1770/75 in France (Saur's artist dictionary) and, according to the latest biographical information, debuted as miniaturist in 1793 (and not in 1790, as other sources imply). His earliest known miniature is dated "l'an 2" (i.e. 2nd year of the French Republic (1793/4)).
He was active in Paris until 1804, after which he moved to Russia where he remained until (probably!) 1818 (in 1813 he was granted membership of St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Art). In 1819-1820, he was exhibiting in different London locations. During his stay in Russia the artist painted a great number of portraits of royalties and aristocrats. He also portrayed French expatriates living in Russia's capital. His works of this period can be viewed in Moscow Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov Gallery, in St. Petersburg Hermitage and Russian Museum, as well as in other Russian museum collections. Dubois' miniatures are not always signed and if signed - then either with monograms "F.D." or "D.B." or with "Dubois", "Dubois F." or "f.Dubois".
