Josef Eduard Teltscher (1801 Brno - 1837 Piraeus) was born as a son of Josef Teltscher, who from 1811 worked as a brewer in Brno, Czech Republic. He graduated school in Brno, where he then began a traineeship at the printing office of Trassler. It was there that he learned the lithography technique. Around 1820, he joined his uncle, who was living in Vienna. There, from 1823, Teltscher studied at the Academy of Fine Art. In 1825, he made acquaintance with composer Franz Schubert and soon became one of the latter's closest friends. There are several portraits of Schubert known to have been painted by Josef Teltscher. In 1827, he also made a drawing showing Ludwig van Beethoven on his deathbed. In 1829-1832, he was working in Graz as a popular portraitist.
