Rare on the current antique market it is a miniature of very good quality by well-known 1st half of the 19th century Austro-Czech artist, Josef Eduard Teltscher.

Josef Eduard Teltscher (1801 Brno - 1837 Piraeus) was born as a son of Josef Teltscher, who from 1811 worked as a brewer in Brno, Czech Republic. He graduated school in Brno, where he then began a traineeship at the printing office of Trassler. It was there that he learned the lithography technique. Around 1820, he joined his uncle, who was living in Vienna. There, from 1823, Teltscher studied at the Academy of Fine Art. In 1825, he made acquaintance with composer Franz Schubert and soon became one of the latter's closest friends. There are several portraits of Schubert known to have been painted by Josef Teltscher. In 1827, he also made a drawing showing Ludwig van Beethoven on his deathbed. In 1829-1832, he was working in Graz as a popular portraitist.
In 1837, together with his friend Johann Baptist Jenger, he traveled to Greece, where he spent some time in Athens. On July 7, 1837, the artist went swimming with a group of friends at the beach of Pieraeus. As one of them began drowning, Teltscher and Baron Anton von Prokesch (Austrian Envoy in Greece) saved his life. However, in the process, Teltscher suffered a fatal heart attack and died.

One could add that, as a lithographer, Josef Teltscher possessed the same skills as Josef Kriehuber. As a watercolor portraitist, on the other hand, he could be compared with Moritz Michael Daffinger.
Works of Josef Eduard Teltscher can be viewed in most esteemed Austrian museums. They very rarely appear at the current antique market.
