Price: 5900 EUR
(please note additional Austrian VAT (Value Added Tax) applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)
Painted in the early 1850s by famous Spanish portraitist Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz as a partial replica of his large-scale work from 1851, it is a portrait of the youngest son of King Louis Philippe of France, Antoine d'Orleans, duc de Montpensier, Infante of Spain. The main, large-scale version, showing him standing in palace interior in full figure, is to see in the Royal Palace of Madrid (see our image nr.). Another partial replica of this portrait we see on the artist's painting that was offered in 2012 at Madrid auction house "Subastas Segre" (see image nr.).
Antoine d'Orleans, duc de Montpensier was born on 31st July 1824 in Neuilly-sur.-Seine and died on 5th February 1890, in Sanlucar de Barrameda in Spain. He was the youngest child of King Louis Philippe of France and his wife Maria Amelia Teresa of the Two Sicilies. He was styled as the Duke of Montpensier. On the 10th October 1846, at Madrid, he married Infanta Luisa Fernanda of Spain, daughter of King Ferdinand II of Spain and his wife Maria Christina of the Two Sicilies. They had ten children.
Antoine d'Orleans lived in Spain from 1848 when he and his family had to leave France after the Revolution of 1848. During the Spanish Revolution of 1868, he supported the insurgents against Queen Isabel II, his sister-in-law.
In 1870 he fought a duel against Infante Enrique, Duke of Seville, the brother of King Francisco, and killed him. He was convicted and sentenced to one month in prison.
On 16th November 1870 the Cortes voted for the next king and chose Amadeo of Savoy with 191 votes. Antoine only received 27 votes, and left Spain, only to return in 1874.
His ambitions were fulfilled by his daughter Mercedes, who became Queen of Spain after her marriage to Alfonso XII, son of Isabel II. However, she died at the age of 18, without issue´.
