This painting, one of the earliest works of then 19-year-old artist Valentin-Louis Doutreleau, shows the three sisters Amsinck walking near their Chateau de la Vieuville by Epinac in department Ille-et-Vilaine, region Bretagne (Brittany), France.
Valentin-Louis Doutreleau (1814 Saint-Servan - 1872) apparently began his art study still in his native Bretagne. In any case we meet him at the age of 21 as an artist who exhibited a portrait of a certain "Mme B." at the Salon de Paris of 1835. Two years later, in 1837 he became pupil of Paul Delaroche at the Parisian Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Later he lived in turn in Paris and Bretagne (Brittany), participating at exhibitions of the Salon until 1870. He specialised in portraits and historical paintings in the "troubadour" style and was also active as a graphic artist and lithographer.
Our additional images show several other paintings by this artist.
