This mid-aged gentleman bearing the insignia of two high Russian awards (corresponding to his high position in the state hierarchy) - breast star of the Order of St. Anna of the 1st class and the neck cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd class - is none other than the famous Russian historian and writer of Alexander I's epoch, Nikolai Michailovich Karamzin (1766-1826; for his biography and known portraits CLICK HERE, HERE and HERE). He obtained his St.Vladimir in 1810, St.Anna - in 1816.
