3200 EUR - 25% DISCOUNT = 2400,00 EUR
This genre painting of the late 18th century is clearly signed "C. Vengner /1795", what means it is a very rare work of the artist from Konstanz at Bodensee (Lake Constance at Austro-German-Swiss border), Konrad (Conrad) Wengner (Vengner).
Konrad (Johann Konrad) Wengner was born in 1728 in Thann at the Lake Constance and died in Konstanz in 1806. In 1760, in Konstanz, he married the daughter of artist F. C. Spiegler. He was mainly active in this town, as well as in the neighboring Kempten, where he also worked as a court artist of the local Prince-Abbot. Wengner specialized in producing wall decorations and altar paintings, but was also a renowned portrait artist (for instance, he painted portraits of the popes Clemens XIII and Clemens XIV, Kaiser Joseph II, General Loudon, etc.). Works of this artist can be viewed in the Bavarian National Gallery (Munich) and in various churches and monasteries.
