We stumbled across this high quality miniature portriat in a private German collection. It is a portrait of then ca.25-year-old (and still unwed) daughter of King George III of the United Kingdom, Princess Elisabeth (1770-1840); CLICK HERE).
In 1818, at the age of 48(!), she had married Landgrave Friedrich of Hesse-Homburg.
This miniature demonstrates strong resemlance to works of well-known, turn of 19th century London miniaturist Charles Bestland (see our web # 43521).
Charles Bestland was born in April of 1763, presumably in London and died in that city, about 1837. He studied from 1789 at the London Royal Academy and specialised himself in miniature portraits which demonstrate influence of Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough and Wheatley. Besides that he copied genre scenes of other artists in oil and watercolor. Works of his can be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and other important public collections. Engravings after his portrait miniatures are shown in the British Museum.
