According to the remainder of an old legend on verso of this work, we are dealing here with a portrait of a certain V. Gais..., who was born on October 28, 1776 and died in 1838. His dress and hairstyle suggest the date of the miniature's execution - sometime between 1795 and 1800.
We are 100% sure to deal here with a work of well-known Bohemian (Czech) miniaturist from the turn odf 19th century, Antonin Bayer
Antonin (Anton) Bayer was born in 1768 in Tannenberg (Svatá Anna / Böhmerwald) and died in 1833 in Prague. He studied from 1801 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and lived mainly in this city, with interruptions for Budapest (1821-23) and Vienna (ca. 1825). His clientele generally included members of aristocracy (especially families Thun and Nostitz) and artists.
