According to his uniform (regulation of 1836-1849) we are dealing with a miniature portrait of an officer of Austrian 6th Dragoon Regiment executed about 1840.
This relatively large miniature on ivory is signed "Th. Mayer" what means we have here a work of Bohemian (Czech) miniaturist of 19th century Frantisek Taddeo Mayer.
Frantisek Taddeo Mayer, called "Czech Daffinger" (in his works he achieved the level of quality of his teacher, best Austrian, 1st half of 19th century miniaturist Michael Moritz Daffinger) was born on 20th October 1812 (not 1814 as Schidlof says) in Kacerov (then Austrian province Bohemia, now Czech Republic) and died in 1856 in Frankfurt on the Main (not in Prague (Schidlof)).
He was a pupil of Daffinger at the Vienna Academy and showed his miniatures at academic exhibitions in 1836 and 1837. About 1840 he settled in Prague where he also exhibited. To that time he was a co-laborator of Czech portraitist Antonin Machek.
In the late 1840s he came to St. Petersburg where he stayed for several years. Especially known among his "Russian" works is a portrait of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (daughter of Emperor Nikolai I).
In 1852 he came back to Prague but moved to Frankfurt on the Main some time later where he (as said above) died in 1856.
Our additional images show several other works of this Czech miniaturist.
