A very similar portrait painted by the same hand and dated 1849 of King Ferdinando II (Ferdinando Carlo) of Two Sicilies (1810-1859; CLICK HERE) was sold in 2017, at Sotheby's London for GBP 6,250 (ca. US $9,000; see our image nr.15).
The portraits on both pieces - the porcelain plate surfaced at Sotheby's and the ormolu paperweight containing obverse a porcelain plaque presented here - were executed by leading Neapolitan porcelain painter of the 1st half of 19th century, Raffaele Giovine, whose speciality was to decorate unvarnished porcelain imported to Naples from France with portraits or figural scenes (see also our images nr.16-19).
The first mention of Raffaele Giovine provides a portrait of King Murat of Naples on a porcelain vase (see image nr.14) signed by him and dated 1814.
Besides his activity as an artist he was also an owner of a manufactory in Naples which produced furniture and other objects of house interior decoration.
In early 1820s he worked shortly at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, thereafter was an artist of Giovanni Pattey's workshop. In 1835 he founded his own workshop at Labaradorio di pietro dure in Neapolitan district S. Carlo alle Mortelle (products of this workshop bear the mark "Giovine in Napoli").
He was the favorite porcelain artist of Kings Ferdinando I, Francesco I and "our" Ferdinando II.
His last known work is dated 1860 (see also images nr.11-14 with other information concerning him).
Provenance: US antique store (as a portrait of an unknown Belgian officer (?!) - see image nr.20).
