Francois Flameng (1856-1923) "Chef d'escadron of 4th Hussars (Republican Army)", oil, late 19th c.
Price: 7900 EUR

As convincingly prove our comparison images nr. we are dealing here with a very typical work of celebrated French, late 19th century artist, Francois Flameng.
Erroneously titled on verso (either by the pre-owner, well-known Belgian collector of art Georges de Froidcourt (1885-1972; CLICK HERE) or (rather!) by an art dealer from whom the latter purchased it still before WWII: "Lieutenant General Lasalle /tue et entree a Wagram" (meant was famous Napoleonic commander, often called "The Hussar General", Antoine Charles Louis de Lasalle (CLICK HERE)), it is in reality a representation (typical for Flameng - see again our comparison images) of a military uniform; the depicted "ideal" hussar has nothing in common with Lasalle (see image nr. with portrait of latter) - he wears a uniform of a "chef d'escadron" (four laces on the cuffs) of the 4th Hussar Regiment (due to the regimental colours) of the French Republican Army (period of Directory).
Francois Flameng (1856 Paris - 1923 Paris) was a very successful French painter during the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th. He was the son of a celebrated engraver Leopold Flameng and received a first-rank education in his craft. Flameng initially received renown for his history painting (especially Napoleonic subjects) and portraiture, and became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He decorated such important civic buildings as the Sorbonne and the Opera Comique, etc., and also produced advertising work. He was granted France's highest civilian honor, the Legion d'Honneur (Commandeur-Cross) and designed France's first bank notes.
Later he received renown for his painting of World War I. He was named honorary president of the Society of Military Painters and an accredited documenter for the War Ministry. His work was displayed in the Hótel des Invalides in Paris, as well as being reproduced in news magazines. Most of these war paintings were donated to the Musée de l'Armée in 1920.
Francois Flameng was a friend of John Singer Sargent, who painted his portrait depicting him together with their common friend Paul Helleu (see our image nr.27), and he also traveled with Jean Leon Gerome and Victor Clairin in Italy.
In 1893-94 Francois Flameng lived in Russia, where he spent the whole summer long as a guest of Prince Yusupov at the latter's estate "Arkhangelskoye" by Moscow and worked at decorations of the palace of sugar manufacturer Pavel Ivanovich Kharitonenko in St. Petersburg. Flameng's popularity in Russia was so high that a lot of his monumental historical paintings were acquired for the royal collection.
