Hugh Bridport (1794 London - ca. 1861 Philadelphia, USA) studied in 1815/16 at the Royal Academy Schools in London under Charles Wilkin. By 1813 he had already exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1816, following the advice of Thomas Sully, he immigrated to the US, where in 1817 he opened his own drawing academy in the city of Philadelphia. Although he mainly lived in Philadelphia, Bridport also worked in other parts of the United States. He regularly exhibited in 1817-1845 at the Pennsylvania Academy and Artist's Fund Society. He painted miniatures, portraits in oils and watercolor landscapes besides executing drawings in various techniques. He was highly thought of. Examples of his art can be viewed at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
