Wilhelm Wachtel was born in 1875, into a Jewish family in Lemberg (then Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Lviv in Western Ukraine). He studied at the Cracow Academy under Jan Stanislawski, Wyczolkowski, Leopold Löffler and Falat and later at the Academy of Munich under Nikolaus Gysis. He lived long time in Vienna and regularly visited Palestina where he settled in 1930. After the begin of WWII he moved to USA where he died in 1952, in the car accident. Most of his works were lost during World War II.
