Called "Enfant a son ecriture" by the auctioneers (see provenance below), this small oil on panel painting shows an aristocratic girl writing under dictation of her lady-tutor.
Formerly in possession of Philippe-Gabriel, duc de Marmier (1783-1845) and his wife Stephanie, duchess de Marmier, nee de Choiseul-Stainville (1782-1861) it came with whole inventory of their Chateau de Ray-sur-Saone (CLICK HERE) to auction house "Vassy & Jalengues" in French town Clermont-Ferrand and was acquired by us at its sale of 23rd November 2019.

Demonstrating highest quality, this painting (it seems to be a preparatory study for a large-scale one) strongly resembles works of well-known French artist Jean-Baptiste Mallet.

Jean-Baptiste Mallet (1759 Grasse - 1835 Paris) at first was a pupil of Julien in Toulon then came to Paris where he became a pupil of Pierre-Paul Prud'hon in Paris. He exhibited at every Salon between 1793 and 1827, obtaining a second class medal in 1812 and a first class medal in 1817. He executed very few portraits, preferring to paint nymphs bathing and graceful classical. He established his reputation with gouache genre scenes of fashionable and often libertine subjects, always elegant and refined, in the style of Louis-Philibert Debucourt and Louis-Léopold Boilly, and remarkable for the delicacy and brilliance of their brushwork. They reveal a knowledge of 17th-century Dutch painting in the treatment of details (transparent crystal, reflections on silk or satin) as well as the choice of themes. Mallet's meticulously precise paintings are one of the best records of fashionable French furnishings and interiors at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. They were very popular and widely disseminated in prints. After ca. 1810 he began to create gere paintings with historical background (Troubadour style).
