Richard Cosway was born in 1742 in Oakford near Bampton, Devon. The family was of Flemish descent and owned a considerable amount of property. Richard was attracted to art from early age on and copied many of the family pictures. The boy was sent to London before he turned twelve to study there under Thomas Hudson and at the Shipley's drawing school. He was awarded prizes at the Society of Arts in 1755-60 and began exhibiting in 1760. In 1769 he entered the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited at the R.A. in 1770-1806. In 1770 Cosway became an associate and in 1771 member of the Academy (RA after name). As a fashionable miniaturist he obtained in 1796 the coveted honour of being made Miniature Painter to the Prince of Wales, with whom he was in friendly terms. When the Prince became Regent in 1811, he was more selective of his immediate circle and Cosway was dropped and never regained his position. After two strokes in ca.1821, he was partially paralyzed and on the 4th July 1821 after another attack whilst out for a drive, he died before getting back home.
