In reality this large miniature on ivory with a portrait of the 50-year-old mother of Kaiser Franz Joseph of Austria, Archduchess Sophie, nee Princess of Bavaria (1803-1872; see our images nr.10-16 with her extensive biography and other portraits in adult age) is a replica of the executed two years before, in 1851, miniature by leading Viennese portrait miniaturist Emanuel Thomas Peter (see our image nr.9; this miniature was formerly in property of Sophie's other son, Franz Joseph's younger brother Archduke (later Emperor of Mexico) Maximilian).
Both miniatures differ from each another in one important detail - the copyist, also a leading Viennese miniaturist Alois von Anreiter (our miniature is clearly signed: "a: Anreiter (1)853)") showed the sitter's face really two years older.
This case is very typical for portrait miniatures by Viennese artists - the sitter him- (or her-)self or his (or her) relatives regularly (usually a bit later) commissioned another leading artist of Vienna with one of several replicas of an already finished original miniature by their colleague. We find such copies in different public and private collections worldwide - Emanuel Thomas Peter executed numerous copies after his teacher Moritz Michael Daffinger (see for example our web # 40581, # 32973, # 32336, # 29705, # 22775, # 27014, # 24472) or Alois von Anreiter after Franz Schrotzberg (see our web # 40306) or Richard Schwager after Josef Kriehuber (our web # 23885) etc.
Alois von Anreiter (1803 Bozen - 1882 Vienna) was a very well-known Viennese portrait painter and portrait miniature artist, later photographer. In 1816-25 he was a merchant in his native Bozen, in 1825-30 studied at the Vienna Academy under Johann Nepomuk Ender. After his studies Anreiter belonged to the most sought after miniaturists in Vienna. The artist worked for Austrian and international high aristocracy. In 1859-73 he was also active as a photographer with a few studios in Vienna. In his late years he dedicated himself again to miniature painting.
Our images nr.17-23 provide artist's biography and show several works of his which were offered in the last years at international art auction market.
