The authentic legend on verso written in German says the following: "Ludwig Héros geb. 1790 in Paris /gest. 1844 in Berlin /Freiheitskämpfer 1813/15 /als Offizier der Artillerie" (English: Ludwig "the hero" (sic! we are sure "Héros" is not his family name but a Latin word for "hero" - B.W.) /born 1790 in Paris /died 1844 in Berlin /combatant of anti-Napoleonic Liberation Wars of 1813/15 /depicted as an officer of artillery".
Why we believe his family name was yet Ludwig and not "Héros"?
The thing is that the sitter bears the Prussian Order of the Iron Cross of the 2nd class, and in the list of awardees of that order there was nobody with the name "Héros" but one artillery (sic!) NCO (non-commissioned officer) with the family name Ludwig - "Kanonier" (gunner) Ludwig from the 3rd Artillery Brigade (Brandenburg) - see our image nr.8.
Unfortunately the first name of this man remains unknown.
We see this man not as an "artillery officer" but in (extremely rare on portraits of that time!) a uniform of an official of the Prussian Post Office. The post coach (with a passenger) behind him (we see it by the building of an "Alte Post" in Berlin district Neukölln (see our image nr.9) means he is a "conducteur" (coacher) of the "Schnellpost" (his coach is one of Prussian express courier service (established in 1820s). According to the government decree of 1830 this job obtained before all retired Prussian NCOs (especially invalids - see our image nr.10).
