We acquired this relatively small (31 x 27 cm) oil painting (together with our web # 43440) at an antique shop in German town Oberursel near Frankfurt am Main. Just after the acquisition we showed its photograph to our permanent advisor, well-known specialist (a. o. author of numerous publications) in Prussian military uniforms, Dr. Stanislav Lyulin. The latter at once informed us that the sitter of this portrait wears a uniform of an "ober-offizier" (junior officer; ranks up to captain) of Prussian Corps of Engineers and that this uniform corresponds to the narrow period of 1842-1843.

This relatively young (he looks to be maximal 40 years of age) officer is decorated with a chest cross of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 4th class.

Consequently our task was to select all junior officers of Prussian Engineers who in 1842/43 possessed the Red Eagle of 4th class and no other awards.

As usual we returned to the standard reference source - 1843 issue (reflects the situation of the preceding year 1842) of "Rang- und Quartierliste der Königlich Preussischen Armee".
As a result we found a single candidate - Hauptmann (captain) Sontheim from 2nd "Ingenieur-Inspektion"" of Prussian Corps of Engineers (see image nr.8)
Moreover, his name is accompanied with the notice "attached to Frankfurt a. M.".
So everything fell into place - acquired in the Frankfurt am Main area the portrait really shows an officer serving in that town.
Moreover, information found in the earlier issues of the same source (see images nr.9-11) allows to maintain that he received his Red Eagle in 1842; this awarding was a perfect reason to immediately order a portrait from a local artist.

Hauptmann's full name was Gustav Friedrich Hermann Sontheim (see image nr.18). His officer's career began in the early 1820s (see 1823 issue of "Rang- und Quartierliste" - image nr.9). Shortly before, being promoted to the rank of a second-lieutenant (lowest rank of a junior officer in the Prussian Army) he came to the 2nd Ingenieur-Inspektion of Corps of Engineers (his subunit was stationed in Thorn (now Torun, Poland)).
In 1838 we meet him already as premier-lieutenant of the 1st Ingenieur-Inspektion, serving as a teacher at the Artillery School in Berlin.
In the following year 1839, in the same rank, he served in Fortress of Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland).
On 4th February 1841 he was transferred to Frankfurt am Main and his promotion to Hauptmann (captain) followed in the same year. As said above, in 1842 he was awarded the Red Eagle of the 4th class.
We meet him again in 1847, still captain, in Frankfurt am Main but already in possession of several additional awards.
In 1848 he was promoted to major.
In July 1849 he left the active service being "aggregiert" (ascribed, as an officer of reserve) to the 1st Ingenieur-Inspektion.
On 10th June 1851 he definitely retreated from the army.

As our image nr.19 shows, the artist depicted him standing before a panoramic view of the river Main with Fortress Rüsselsheim by Frankfurt a. M..
This composition is very typical for portrait works of Professor Eduard von Steinle (1810-1868), leading Frankfurt artist of that period and the painting was surely executed by one of latter's pupils, also working in that area (see our comparison images nr.20-21).

The famous Austro-German historical and nazarene painter of the 19th century Eduard von Steinle studied at the Vienna Academy (he began his studies in 1823 at the age of 13) under V.G.Kininger and L.Kupelwieser. From 1828 he worked in Rome in the circle of nazarene painters Overbeck, Cornelius, Veit and Fuehrich. From 1837 the artist was active in Germany, in 1850 became a professor of historical painting at the "Staedelsches Institut" in Frankfurt a.M. His works are displayed in the greatest public collections in Austria and abroad.

P.S.
From the same source (both came from the same private estate in Frankfurt a. M.) we acquired another portrait of Sontheim, showing him much younger, still before 1822, as cadet of the Prussian "Garde-Pionier Bataillon" (see our web # 43440). Being transferred from the Guards to the army he obtained his first officer's rank of a second-lieutenant: On this a bit smaller portrait he is depicted in landscape with Fortress Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz where was his company stationed.

We are very grateful to Dr. Lyulin for his generous help.
