This work was discovered in a private German collection. It is a very rare miniature portrait of celebrated Russian soldier, Piotr Alexandrovich Stepanov. Here, Stepanov is painted just after (October 17, 1860) he was advanced in rank to lieutenant-general (note the three stars on his epaulettes). Only one other portrait of his (it was made in approximately the same period) was known thus far: it is a steel engraving (see our image nr.7) that was an illustration in (published in the years 1858-1861 in St. Petersburg; sic! it was made before 1862) the series of portraits of combatants, who distinguished themselves while commanding the field troops in the War of 1853-1856 (i.e. Crimean War, called in Russia "Oriental War").
Moreover, he is most remembered as a military writer (memoirist) and a close friend of famous composer Michail Ivanovich Glinka and (before all else!) as a longstanding (from 1870 until his death in 1891) town mayor of Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar's summer residence by St. Petersburg). Our images nr.7-9 provide his extensive biography; also CLICK HERE and CLICK HERE).

The author of this miniature was clearly a Moscow artist: the backing card on verso of this work (see our image nr.5) bears a remainder of two inscriptions written respectively in Latin and Cyrillic alphabet: both of them relate to certain address (artist's own?) in Gazetny pereulok (one of Moscow's side-streets).

Moscow art historian A. B. Savinov believes the author of this miniature could be well-known Russian watercolor portrait artist and miniaturist Vladimir Ivanovich Hau (1816-1895; for latter's extensive biography see our images nr.10-11; for other works of his CLICK HERE)

Vladimir Ivanovich (Woldemar) Hau was born in 1816 in Reval (now Tallinn, Capital of Estonia) and died in 1895 in St. Petersburg. He was Pupil of K.F. V. Kuegelgen in Reval and of A. Sauerweid at the St. Petersburger Academy, where he successfully graduated in 1836 (In 1849 he became then an Academician).
In 1838-40 he made a long journey to Germany and Italy, and thereafter was active in St. Petersburg as a court portraitist of the Tsar's families from Nikolai I to Alexander III. He was a virtuous watercolor portraitist, who was specially known for his female (sic!) portraits.
Works of his (among them portrait of our sitter and other members of Nikolai I's family) belong to the collection of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Other works can be seen in the Tretyakov Gallery and Pushkin Museum, Moscow, and in various other important Russian and international museums and private collections.
