Signed "Langlois /1791" it is a work of well-known Parisian, late 18th century miniaturist Jerome Langlois. According to the authentic old legend on verso it is a portrait of certain "Madame Comtesse de Maillebois". This relatively young lady was probably the wife of Jean-Baptiste Yves Marie Desmarets vicomte (since 1791 (sic!) comte) de Maillebois (b. 1748), only son of famous French aristocrat and Marshal Yves Marie Desmarets comte de Maillebois (1715-1791; see our image nr.).

Jerome Langlois was born (according to Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard) in ca. 1753 in Paris and died in the same city in 1804. In 1779 he entered the school of the Academie Royale, where he was a pupil of Doyen and Vien. He worked as a miniaturist in Paris, where he lived at 23, rue de l'Arcade and where he exhibited at the Salons of 1793, 1798, 1802 and 1804.
