Kharlampi Dmitrievich Kostandi "Night at Golden Horn, Constantinople", oil/canvas, 1890/90
Relatively rare for the oeuvre of this artist (we could only find one other painting with a similar subject online - see our image nr.) it is a work of Odessa, late 19th century artist Kharlampi Dmitrievich Kostandi. It is a nocturne view of Golden Horn, major waterway of the Bosporus in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey (CLICK HERE).
Kharlampi Dmitrievich Kostandi (also Kostanda) was born in Odessa on the Black Sea in the second half of the 1860s. He studied at the Odessa Art School and afterwards at several private studios in Paris. He painted chiefly costal motives, seascapes and forest landscapes. As an exponent he is known through his participation at the 2nd Spring Exhibition of 1897 in Odessa. In 1900 he picked out 100 works for the lottery "To good of refuge for journalists"; this collection was exhibited in Odessa before the lottery's day.
