A luxurious and elaborately decorated metal box with eight portraits of members of Brunswick (Braunschweig) Royal Family and a large (inset in lid) miniature picturing a genre scene. All miniatures of this group show stylistic criteria of works by well-known Berlin miniaturist Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki. Very possibly, they are original works of this artist.
Two small portraits on the lid are those of Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand von Braunschweig-Wolfenbuettel-Lueneburg (1735-1806) and of his wife Duchess Auguste von Braunschweig (1734-1813), sister of King George III of Great Britain (see our first additional image). These smallest portraits of the whole group are miniatures shown by images nr. 9 and nr. 11 from the top.
Among other recognized persons in this group are also Philippine Charlotte, Duchess of Brunswick, nee Princess of Prussia, sister of King Friedrich II (the Great) of Prussia (she is the lady wearing a black kerchief; see our second additional image with her portrait in old age) and Anna Amalia, Duchess of Saxe-Weimar (1739-1807), nee Princess of Brunswick, sister of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand (she is the lady wearing a blue coat and a black hat).
While continuing to research the identities of the remaining four persons we would greatly appreciate any feedback concerning them.
Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726 Danzig - 1801 Berlin) started to paint small watercolor miniatures on parchment as box insets already at the age of fifteen. Quite soon he became a pupil of the Augsburg painter Haid, who introduced him to enamel painting. Later Chodowiecki studied under Bernhard Rode and tried to paint in oil. However, his favorite technique became the art of etching, so that miniature, enamel and oil painting had to take second place to his new occupation. Chodowiecki established good connections to the editors of pocket calendars in Berlin, Gotha, Goettingen. For them he created his most typical illustration series. The artist drew those small-size illustratrions and let different engravers make etchings of them.
Our images nr.45-48 show several other miniatures by this artist.
Special thanks to Dr. Bodo Hofstetter, world's best expert of portrait miniatures, who recognized the sitters as members of the Royal Family of Brunswick.
