On view here is a very rare (probably the earliest one) portrait, executed in 1831, of the then 19-year old Otto Julius Bernhard von Corvin-Wiersbitzki, later a celebrated German writer, then 19-year old "second-lieutenant" of the Prussian 36th Infantry Regiment (see image nr. 5), stationed in fortress Mainz (CLICK HERE)
Why he ordered this portrait showing him not in his regimental but in civil dress remains unclear. In any case there are no reasons not to believe in the old legend on verso which seems to be absolutely authentic. Besides that Corvin's portrait of adult age (see our image nr.7) shows the same facial characteristics.

Otto Julius Berhard von Corvin-Wiersbitzki was born on 12th October 1818 in Gumbinnen, Prussia and died on 2nd March 1886 in Wiesbaden. His father was cavalry captain, later director of post office in Gumbinnen. His parents divorced in his childhood and from 1822 he was raised by his mother who had moved with him to Halberstadt. He attended military schools in Potsdam and Berlin-Lichterfelde, eventually becoming officer of the Prussian Army.
From 1830 he served in fortress Mainz, before in 1835 he left the military to devote himself to writing.
For further information about him see our images nr.6.

With a great possibility author of this, executed in 1831, miniature could be artist Luis Schulz (life dates unknown) who was active in Mainz about 1830.
