Alfred Edward Chalon was born in Geneva in 1780 and moved with his family to Sandhurst (Berxshire, Great Britain) in 1789 and further to London where he became student of the Royal Academy in 1797. First painting exclusively portrait miniatures on ivory, he later also painted larger watercolor portraits as well as oil paintings with historical and religious subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1801-1860 and became and an associate in 1812 and member of the Academy in 1816. He also exhibited at the British Institute in 1807-1838. From 1826 he was royal painter to the Duchess of Cambridge and from 1838 royal painter to Queen Victoria. Chalon was considered the most significant miniaturist in London, by name portraitist of women of his time.
