An extreme rarity at the current antique market, it is an original "Russian" watercolor by (known chiefly through his watercolored prints) English artist John Augustus Atkinson.
John Augustus Atkinson was born in 1775 in London. At the age of 9 he accompanied his uncle James Walker (engraver in service of Catherine the Great) to St. Petersburg. Initially, in the Russian capital, Atkinson was greatly patronized by the Empress and - after the latter's death - by her son Paul I. He was an autodidact, who gathered most of his knowledge at the Imperial Picture Gallery. In St. Petersburg, he became a court portraitist (he painted, among others, a portrait of Paul I atop a white stallion), Grand Duke Alexander and Field-Marshal A. Suvorov; on commission of Paul II made historical paintings for Saint Michael's (Michailovski) Castle and was also active as an illustrator.
