An extreme rarity at the current antique market, it is an original "Russian" watercolor by (known chiefly through his watercolored prints) English artist John Augustus Atkinson.

John Augustus Atkinson was born in 1775 in London. At the age of 9 he accompanied his uncle James Walker (engraver in service of Catherine the Great) to St. Petersburg. Initially, in the Russian capital, Atkinson was greatly patronized by the Empress and - after the latter's death - by her son Paul I. He was an autodidact, who gathered most of his knowledge at the Imperial Picture Gallery. In St. Petersburg, he became a court portraitist (he painted, among others, a portrait of Paul I atop a white stallion), Grand Duke Alexander and Field-Marshal A. Suvorov; on commission of Paul II made historical paintings for Saint Michael's (Michailovski) Castle and was also active as an illustrator.
In 1801, after the assassination of his patron Paul I, Atkinson returned to London, where in 1803-04 and 1813 he released 3 volumes of aquatints (printed in various colors) after his own drawings and watercolors (sic!) brought from Russia. In the years that followed he became well known in England through his paintings, drawings and prints with episodes of Napoleonic Wars.
In 1829 he made his last contribution to London Royal Academy exhibition. The exact date of his death was not recorded, yet it is known that he was still alive in 1831.
