On view here is a large miniature portrait of the famous French surgeon, Professor Baron Antoine Dubois (1756-1837, CLICK HERE. It is a masterful copy after the famous oil painting by Francois Gerard in the Museum "Chateaux de Malmaison" (see our image nr.12).
Authentic legend on verso informs us that it was a gift presented in January 1843 to Dubois' pupil, "medecin-en-chef" of military medicinal bath in Bourbonne-les-Bains, department Haute-Marnr, Dr. Antoine Francois Andre Therrin (Therin) by Dubois' daughter Clementine and her husband, former pharmacist of Napoleon I, Charles Felix Cadet de Gassicourt (see images nr.7-8).
The artist's signature "Mourlan-Desaugiers" means that we are obviously dealing either with a work of a female artist with double (married!) name or with a collective work of two artists. We have to note that "Mourlan" was the name of well-known Parisian portrait miniaturist and lithographer Pierre Joseph Hippolyte Alexandre Mourlan (1789-1860). On the other hand "Desaugiers" was the name of well-known French composer, dramatist, and songwriter Marc-Antoine Madeleine Désaugiers (1772-1827). Both men were probably acquainted with each other - in ca. 1810 Mourlan lithographed (after an oil painting by L. Reisner) a portrait of Desaugiers (see image 10). On another note, among the exponents of Salon de Paris, in 1840s there was female portraitist Eugenie Desaugiers, nee Duboys. Was she a relative of (the never married) Marc-Antoine Desaugiers? Was she co-laborator (pupil?) of miniaturist Mourlan? Or did she even marry Mourlan after the death of her first husband, a certain Monsieur Desaugiers? All these questions still remain unanswered...
