Round box with inserted into its' lid octagonal miniature on ivory with a portrait of a young gentleman from the period of French Directory. Illegible (authentic! - see image nr.6) legend on verso of miniature allows to read only"...Bourg chef lieu de la Republique" (English: "...Bourg main town of the department of the Republic"). Surely meant was Bourg-en-Bresse, centre of department Ain in Eastern France, and the sitter was one of the residents (officials?) in that town.
The miniature is clearly signed (monogrammed) and dated: "D.M./3. (1796 - B.W.)", which means we are dealing with an original work of French, turn of 19th century miniaturist Jean-Louis-Dominique Duvaucel (called "Marsoeuvre").
Until recently the identity of the French miniaturist signing his works with the ligated monogram "D.M." was practically unknown. You only knew (on the base of legends on verso of some of his miniatures) that he worked in the late 18th century in Bordeaux and Paris.
An article of leading French specialist in portrait miniatures, Mme Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard, published in issue n°36, 2019 of "Etudes Epistémè" at last provided the biography of this 1st class artist.
Through an in-depth search in various archives Mme Lemoine-Bouchard found out that the artist's full name was Jean-Louis-Dominique Duvaucel, and that he worked under the pseudonym "Marsoeuvre". He was born in Paris, on the 8th of November 1749 and died there on July the 13th 1830.

The date "3" on our miniature means it was made in the 3rd year of French Republic; the French Republican calender started in late 1792, thus the real date is 1795.
