Clearly monogrammed "DM" (ligated) and dated "4" (4th year of the Republic, i.e 1796), it is an original work of French, turn of 19th century miniaturist Jean-Louis-Dominique Duvaucel (called "Marsoeuvre").
His identity is still unknown but his numerous remaining works (see our image nr.7 with an article from Lemoine-Bouchard) witness the outstanding talent of this artist.
Until recently the identity of the French miniaturist signing his works with the ligated monogram "D.M." was practically unknown. You only knew (on the base of legends on verso of some of his miniatures) that he worked in the late 18th century in Bordeaux and Paris.
An article of leading French specialist in portrait miniatures, Mme Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard, published in issue n°36, 2019 of "Etudes Epistémè" at last provided the biography of this 1st class artist.
Through an in-depth search in various archives Mme Lemoine-Bouchard found out that the artist's full name was Jean-Louis-Dominique Duvaucel, and that he worked under the pseudonym "Marsoeuvre". He was born in Paris, on the 8th of November 1749 and died there on July the 13th 1830.
