Caspar Gerhard Klotz was born in 1774 in Mannheim as a son of the painter Mathias Klotz and brother of the painters Joseph and Simon Klotz. He began to study with his father and then in Munich under Dorner the Elder. In 1794 Klotz was appointed by the Bavarian Kurfuerst Karl Theodor to royal painter. In 1803 he was in Paris, then in Vienna and other German and Austrian cities, in 1812-17 lived in Frankfurt on Maine and its' surroundings, then until his death in 1847 in Munich.
