A. Yavorskyi "Russian naval "shtab-lekar'" and his wife", two watercolor portraits, 1841

Price: 1900  EUR

(please note additional 13% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

We are dealing here with executed in 1841 in Russia (female portrait is signed in Cyrillic: A Yavorskyi /1841) two small watercolor portraits of relatively young (newly-wedded?) married couple. The husband is shown wearing uniform of a naval "shtab-lekar' " (senior rank of a doctor in Russian Navy) and bearing two Russian and one Turkish medals (for observer from left to right):
1) silver medal "For Turkish War" (1829)
2) bronze medal for noblemen "In Memory of Patriotic War of 1812"; he bears it as an oldest son of a late man who was awarded this medal
3) Turkish golden medal "In memoriam of the arrival of Russian squadron to Bosphor in 1833" (see our image nr.13 and CLICK HERE).

The name "A. Yavorskyi" is not to find in any Russian (or Polish; Jaworski (in Russian spelling Yavorskyi) is a typical Polish family name, and part of modern Poland was then in Russian Empire) art refference sources. However, due to high quality he was a professional artist.
We are sure he is ident with "A. Yavorskyi", Polish-born student of "Rishelievskyi" Lyceum in Odessa at Black Sea (sic! harbour town!) who in 1825 portrayed staying then in that city famous Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz (see our image nr.14).
Moreover, with almost 100% possibility he is "artist A. Yavorskyi" , in 1830s/40s employee of Museum of Antiques in Crimean harbour town (sic!) Kerch whose, dated 1836 drawings after antiques found at excavations in Kerch belong today to collection of Odessa Archeological Museum (see our images nr.15-16).

Provenance: private collection, Australia

We are very grateful to leading specialists in old Russian uniforms, Dr. Alexander Kibovskyi and Sergei A. Popov for generous help
